The Lovely

I have set up this blog because I want to think of the nice things about myself and the people around me.

The thing is that I believe that everyone, (except perhaps the most arrogant people) could do with loving themselves a bit more, whatever their circumstances. I’m not talking about trying to make yourself believe you are infallible or better than others. What I mean is we need to learn to look after ourselves and realise we are precious.

I made a resolution a few weeks back, that each morning I would give myself a hug, and yes I know that sounds like total hippy bullshit, but it makes me feel good.

We need to give ourselves the kind of love that recognises that we will make mistakes. We will not always to do others as we would have done to us. Sometimes we will be lazy and unpleasant, but thats ok, as long as on the whole, we keep trying to be nicer people.

Imagine your 80-year-old self, looking back at your younger self. You wouldn’t make harsh judgements on yourself, and you certainly wouldn’t be worrying about the odd bad hair day. You would, in the words of a Baz Luhrman song, ‘See the power and beauty of your youth’.

We can become our own mentors, and take pleasure in the good we see in ourselves.

The Beautiful

Beauty is a difficult issue.

Some believe that image is everything in the modern world, and that you should work out, diet, spend money on clothes, bags and shoes and have lots of beauty treatments to try and achieve your ideal look.

Another view is that vanity is shallow, stick thin models should be banned from the media, and we should all quit using makeup.

What both these views lack is self love.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to look pretty. As humans we have eyes, we can appreciate art, and there is nothing at all wrong with wanting the world and its creatures to be aesthetically pleasing. Taking care of yourself is a very positive thing.

Why not splash out on a lushious dress, you only live once- you might as well do so feeling pretty!

The problem comes with focusing on looking good for other people. You’ve got to look good for yourself, and measure yourself against your own standards- not the world’s. So you look a bit less spotty today- thats cause to celebrate, even if your skin is not perfectly clear!

And if you can’t afford a bag or shoes or a haircut- don’t buy it because you think you’ll get a man or more friends that way. Wait until your finances are healthier and cherish yourself for your discipline.

Lovely AND Beautiful

This site is here so that people of any age, gender or race can write nice things about themselves. Tell the world about the lovely qualities you have or the lovely things you have done, and the things you know are beautiful about yourself and the body you are living in.

It will also serve as a reserve supply of good feelings, in preparation for self esteem catastrophes, so that if someone bitches about you, your boyfriend dumps you, the career does not go according to plan or you get bad exam results, you can look on here, and remember why you should love yourself anyway.

The world is a harsh place- human beings are naturally competitive and some people can only make themselves feel good by pointing out others flaws.

We all need a store cupboard stash of ammo against this kind of negativity.

Email me

Email me at loveliness@live.co.uk, telling me your age, occupation and the country you live in, and tell me what you like about yourself, the way you look and your character, and what you do to feel good about yourself.

I will publish the emails here, and hopefully it’ll generate a lot of positive feelings.

Give yourself a hug, and maybe we can all start feeling better about ourselves.
